Today is the National Day of Prayer. This annual observance, established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1952 and signed by President Harry Truman, encourages Americans to turn to God in prayer and meditation.

In President Donald Trump’s proclamation last year, he stated, “From the earliest days of our Nation’s journey, America has been guided by the grace of Almighty God. Beginning with the opening prayer at the First Continental Congress in 1774, our faith has perpetually stood as the summit of our strength, the source of our unity, and the fount of our greatness.“
“This National Day of Prayer, we thank God for His endless blessings – and we ask Him to grant us fortitude, wisdom, and a renewed spirit of justice as we continue the work to save our country and restore our national promise,“ the president continued. “Today and every day, we bow our heads in prayer to thank God for His countless gifts and to ask for His divine protection. Above all, we acknowledge that prayer is the foundation of our past, the guiding hand of our present, and the light of our future.“

- Cast, Don’t Carry
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you. – Psalm 55:22
In his lifetime, King David faced some very difficult circumstances. And yet, through it all, he knew that as long as he placed his trust in God, everything would eventually work out. The psalms are full of David’s writings about experiencing fear but still trusting in God.
David wrote Psalm 55 while facing a rebellion or power struggle over his leadership of Israel. To make matters worse, one of the key leaders in the struggle was someone whom David had previously trusted. As a result of this, the city was actually a dangerous place for David to be in. But rather than give up or let his fears get the better of him, David chose to reach out to God.
While a friend’s betrayal and an extreme challenge to authority were indeed heavy burdens to bear, David knew that he could and should rely on God to endure it. He recognized that he needed to cast the heavy weight of his struggle onto God rather than be crushed trying to carry it on his own. This choice did not remove David from the difficult situation, but helped to sustain him through it. In the end, David became a stronger servant of God.
When you experience frightening things in this world, do you give them to God and believe that He will handle whatever is weighing you down? Talk to Him about it today. Let go of your burden and trust that God will be there to help you endure whatever comes. As you pray, intercede for the governing officials of the United States as they, too, face struggles in their lives and work.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
