Federal Judge Pauses CFPB Mass Firings

She expressed concern over the president’s administration’s attempt to dismantle the bureau.

District Judge Amy Berman Jackson paused the effort of President Donald Trump’s administration to implement mass layoffs within the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

Judge Jackson previously issued a preliminary injunction to prevent the administration from firing around 88 percent of the CFPB’s workforce while the lawsuit against the firings is processed in her court. During Friday’s hearing, Jackson said she was concerned that CFPB Acting Director Russ Vought is ignoring the injunction and following through with staff reductions to bring the workforce down from 1,700 to 200.

Judge Berman Jackson stated that, if the administration is allowed to reduce the size of the agency as the circuit court panel permitted last week, it would “decimate the agency and render it unable to comply with its statutory duties.” She stated that if the plan were allowed to proceed before she has issued a ruling in the employee union’s suit, “there will be no agency standing.”

The judge scheduled a hearing for April 28 regarding the proposed reduction in force (RIF). She said, “I’m willing to resolve it quickly, but I’m not going to let this RIF go forward until I have.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Judge Jackson to be discerning as she addresses the circuit court panel’s ruling on the administration’s effort to reduce the size of CFPB.
  • For OMB Director Vought as he oversees the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and plans to implement mass layoffs.
