President Orders Easing PRIMNM Fishing Prohibition

He also signed an executive order to assess the federal regulations imposed on the commercial fishing industry.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week intended to ease regulations on commercial fishing and issued a proclamation regarding the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRIMNM).

The president stated that, within 30 days, “the Secretary of Commerce shall identify the most heavily overregulated fisheries requiring action and take appropriate action to reduce the regulatory burden on them, in cooperation with the Regional Fishery Management Councils, interagency partners, and through public-private partnerships, as appropriate.“

President Trump addressed the establishment and expansion of PRIMNM which withdrew more than 400,000 square miles of Pacific Ocean area “from all forms of entry, location, selection, sale, leasing, or other disposition under the public land laws for care and management by the Federal Government.“

“I find that appropriately managed commercial fishing would not put the objects of scientific and historic interest that the PRIMNM protects at risk,“ the president stated. “As a result of the prohibitions on commercial fishing, American fishing fleets have lost access to nearly half of the United States’ Exclusive Economic Zone in the Pacific Islands.  This has driven American fishermen to fish further offshore in international waters to compete against poorly regulated and highly subsidized foreign fleets.  This disadvantages honest United States commercial fishermen and is detrimental for United States territories like American Samoa, whose private sector economy is over 80 percent dependent on the fishing industry.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump to be prudent as he seeks to lift the regulatory burdens on certain industries.
  • For Commerce Secretary Lutnick to receive God’s guidance as he assesses the regulatory burden from the federal government on the commercial fishing industry.
