Senate members can refuse support for nominees that would serve in their state.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced his intent to retain his “blue slip” to block President Donald Trump’s attorney appointees to the southern and eastern districts of New York.
The senators of a given state can choose to withhold their approval of judicial nominees for federal courts in their states. If Schumer’s colleague from New York also chooses to withhold their blue slip, these nominees may not receive their final confirmation.
Senator Schumer expressed skepticism of the president’s motives and intentions. “For that reason, I will not return the blue slip for the U.S. Attorney nominees for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York,” he said.
A spokesperson from Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley’s office stated, “The Judiciary Committee has long honored the traditional blue slip process for U.S. Attorney nominees.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Minority Leader Schumer to make decisions and take action based on the good of the nation and his state.
- For wisdom for President Trump and his advisors as they appoint people to judicial positions.
