Social Security Administration updates security procedures to reduce fraud.
President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on Tuesday barring illegals from receiving any benefits from Social Security. The order also directed an investigation into benefits being sent to recipients recorded as being over 100 years old with mismatched records. A Medicare and Medicaid fraud prosecution program will also be established.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated, “The memorandum will direct the administration to ensure ineligible aliens are not receiving funds from the Social Security Act programs.“
The White House published a fact sheet that outlined President Trump’s effort to protect Social Security and Medicare. The president stated, “Over the past two decades, the federal government has made an estimated $2.7 trillion in ‘improper payments‘ — the majority of which come in the form of ‘payments to deceased individuals or those who no longer [are] eligible for government programs.‘”
The White House press secretary said that President Trump “is absolutely certain about protecting Social Security benefits for law-abiding, tax-paying American citizens and seniors who have paid into this program.“
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has reclassified 6,300 criminal migrants paroled under the previous administration into the Ineligible Master File. The SSA has also recently updated its security procedures to address fraud with stricter identification measures. Benefits claims will still be processed over the phone, but changes to direct deposit information must be done in person.
The policy is tied to broader federal efforts to reduce fraud and waste.
