Judge Jeannette Vargas
Southern New York U.S. District Court
Jeannette Anne Vargas was born in 1973. She earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard College and her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. She clerked for then-Judge Sonia Sotomayor in the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
Vargas served as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York in the Tax and Bankruptcy Unit. She then served as senior trial counsel and then deputy chief of the Civil Division.

In the News…
U.S. District Judge Jeannette Vargas determined that a single DOGE employee may access U.S. Treasury Department systems after he receives departmental training and submits a financial report. The judge had initially issued an injunction that prohibited DOGE access to the Treasury systems in February.
Judge Vargas wrote, “The Court hereby modifies the [preliminary injunction] Order to permit Defendants to grant Ryan Wunderly access to Treasury Department payment records, payment systems, and any other data systems maintained by the Treasury Department containing personally identifiable information and/or confidential financial information of payees.“
The judge indicated that the original injunction was placed due to the “hasty implementation and gaps in training” of the Treasury Department’s DOGE team members.
