Senator Threatens to Subpoena U.S. Army Info on Black Hawk D.C. Collision

The Senate committee has repeatedly requested information regarding the service branch’s safety surveillance system policy.

Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has threatened to subpoena the U.S. Army for its refusal to disclose information regarding the deadly crash near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in January when a Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines flight.

Senator Cruz and Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington, the ranking member on the committee, have repeatedly asked the Army for an official memo outlining its decision to not use its Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS–B) safety system, which broadcasts information such as aircraft location, speed, and height, while the helicopter was on a training flight near the airport.

“It begs the question — what doesn’t the Army want Congress or the American people to know about why it was flying partially blind to the other aircraft and to the air traffic controllers near DCA?” Cruz said. “This is not acceptable.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Senators Cruz and Cantwell as they seek to hold the Army accountable for not using the air surveillance system during training.
  • For Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll as he considers the request from the Senate committee.
  • For U.S. Army officials to be forthcoming regarding the use of the safety system.
