Legislation proposes AI pilot program to help federal agency detect hazardous products and track market trends.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved the Consumer Safety Technology Act, reintroduced by Representative Darren Soto of Florida. The bill seeks to enhance the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) with AI technology to identify product hazards, track injury trends, and monitor for recalled or restricted items.
“The whole point is, look, the crooks already have artificial intelligence, so the cops on the beat need to have AI, too,” said Congressman Soto. He said he sees the legislation as a step toward both innovation and safeguarding consumers in an evolving digital marketplace.
The proposed pilot program would involve collaboration with AI experts, data scientists, manufacturers, and safety organizations, with findings reported to Congress within a year. The legislation also tasks the Commerce Department and Federal Trade Commission with exploring blockchain technology’s role in consumer protection.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For representatives in the House as they seek to harness AI for consumer safety.
- For members of Congress as they consider federal regulations and guidelines for the use and implementation of AI.
