Freshman Member of Congress Dies Hours After President’s Joint Session Address

Representative Turner was sworn into office in January.

Representative Sylvester Turner experienced a medical emergency and passed away on Tuesday night hours after President Donald Trump’s address to the joint session of Congress. Congressman Turner, aged 70, was elected to the seat representing the 18th district of Texas formerly held by the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, and was sworn into office in January with the 119th Congress.

He had been diagnosed with bone cancer in November of 2022 and underwent surgery and radiation treatments.

Congressman Turner had been a member of the Texas House of Representatives for 27 years, then served as mayor of Houston. He was a member of the Church Without Walls and is survived by an adult daughter.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For God’s comfort for Representative Turner’s daughter and his other loved ones and friends.
  • For members of Congress as they mourn the loss of their colleague.
