The public is invited to share experiences of speech restrictions and content limitations.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently launched an inquiry into how technology platforms might limit users’ access to services based on speech or affiliations, possibly violating consumer protection or competition laws.
“Tech firms should not be bullying their users,” said Chair Andrew Ferguson. “This inquiry will help the FTC better understand how these firms may have violated the law by silencing and intimidating Americans for speaking their minds.”
To gather insights, the FTC issued a Request for Information inviting public comments on censorship experiences. Users who experienced faced bans, shadow bans, or demonetization are encouraged to share their stories by May 21, 2025. The FTC intends to use this feedback to assess whether tech platforms have engaged in unlawful practices, ensuring consumers’ rights to freely express their ideas are protected.
