In the News…

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced litigation this month against the state of New York, particularly Governor Kathy Hochul, State Attorney General Letitia James, and Commissioner Mark Schroeder of the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The suit is being brought against the New York officials for shielding illegal aliens from federal enforcement.

The state has a Green Light Law that allows people who may not legally reside in the U.S. to receive a driver’s license. State officials intended for the law to reduce collisions with uninsured drivers and improve road safety.

The federal lawsuit states the law is “a frontal assault on the federal immigration laws, and the federal authorities that administer them” given a provision in the state law that requires illegal immigrants to be informed by the commissioner of the DMV when federal immigration agencies request their information.

“New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens,” AG Bondi said. “This is a new DOJ, and we are taking steps to protect Americans.”

The U.S. attorney general said, “If you don’t comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable. We did it to Illinois. … If you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next.”
