The White House continues to pursue its government efficiency agenda.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) dismissed 6,700 employees on Thursday, becoming the next cut in a series of mass federal layoffs. All the workers fired were probationary employees, those who are hired on a trial basis before becoming full-time.
White House Council of Economic Advisors chair Kevin Hassett said that these firings were made by President Trump’s administration with a focus on government efficiency.
“I think our objective is to make sure that the employees that we pay are being productive and effective. And there are many, more than 100,000 people working to collect taxes. And not all of them are fully occupied. And the Treasury secretary is studying the matter and feels like 3,500 is a small number, and probably you can get bigger as we improve the IT at the IRS,” Chair Hassett said.
