U.S. Navy Deploys Newest Assault Ship to Japan

The stealth jet carrier will replace the USS America.

The U.S. Navy has announced that its newest warship, USS Tripoli, will replace its sister ship, USS America, as the lead vessel of an amphibious “ready group” stationed at Sasebo Naval Base, Japan. The Tripoli, commissioned in 2020 and formerly based in San Diego, will join Amphibious Squadron 11—the only unit of its kind stationed outside the U.S.

“The forward presence of Tripoli supports the United States’ commitment to the defense of Japan, enhances the national security of the United States, and improves its ability to protect strategic interests,” the Naval Surface Force stated. “Tripoli will directly support the Defense Strategic Guidance to posture the most capable units forward in the Indo-Pacific Region.”

The USS America, which has been stationed in Japan since 2019, will return to its original homeport in San Diego. Both ships carry a variety of aircraft, including F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters, MV-22 Osprey tiltrotors, and MH-60S Knighthawk helicopters.

The USS Tripoli features improvements, including an expanded hangar, improved aviation support spaces, and an upgraded medical bay. The ship will deploy regularly with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit from Okinawa, supporting operations such as humanitarian aid, maritime security, and disaster relief.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Secretary of the Navy Terrence Emmert as he oversees the service branch.
  • For wisdom for U.S. naval officials as they deploy and bring back various ships and vessels.
