The House speaker plans to work the weekend to update the proposal.
Members of the House majority concluded a three-hour negotiation meeting on Thursday, negotiating the details of a potential budget reconciliation package. Leaders have been deliberating the legislation for weeks, and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said he’ll work over the weekend to bring it to the floor as soon as possible.
“We are almost there,” Speaker Johnson said Thursday. “A couple final details that we’ve got to work out.”
But the main point of disagreement is the topline for government spending, an issue for fiscal conservatives that advocate for greater spending cuts.
“We still aren’t in agreement on the topline,” said Majority Leader Steve Scalise. “You’re talking about big changes. You need to make sure, not just, you know, something that could pass out of the Budget Committee but something that can pass the whole House.”
“We’re pretty close on a range, we just… need to get answers on some very specific questions, and then that will open up the number,” Congressman Scalise added.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For legislative leaders as they seek to find an acceptable cap for federal funding.
- For Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Scalise to receive God’s wisdom as they head the appropriations negotiation.
