Transportation Secretary Orders Reevaluation of Fuel Economy Standards

The administration seeks to lower costs by reducing regulatory burdens.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has directed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to review and potentially revise federal fuel economy standards for vehicles starting with the 2022 model year. This follows an executive order from President Trump intended to align fuel regulations with his administration’s energy policies, which prioritize fossil fuels.

The previous administration set stricter fuel efficiency requirements—mandating an average of 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031. Secretary Duffy framed the rollback as a measure to reduce regulatory burdens that he states have increased vehicle costs.

The administration is also reviewing policies promoting electric vehicles, including subsidies and emissions regulations. Automakers, anticipating fewer government mandates for EVs, have already adjusted their strategies with companies like Stellantis and Volkswagen scaling back or delaying electric vehicle production.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also expected to reassess limits on vehicle emissions, which could impact California’s ability to enforce stricter standards.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Duffy to be led by the Lord as he heads the Department of Transportation.
  • For President Trump and his economic advisors as they seek to reduce the cost of living.
