Senator Places Blanket Hold on State Department Nominations

The move is a protest against President Trump’s changes to USAID.

Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii announced a blanket hold on all President Trump’s nominees passing through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the panel on which he is a member. This motion forces the committee to take a number of extra steps to approve notable but less prominent nominees to State Department positions, which could have been voted on almost immediately without the hold.

Senator Schatz made this move in protest of the modifications of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) that President Trump administration’s has made, including placing it within the State Department. Those opposed to the president’s move highlight the transition of the independent agency established by Congress under the jurisdiction of the executive branch.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For senators to be discerning as they hold hearings for the president’s nominees.
  • For wisdom for members of Congress as they consider appropriations legislation.
