DHS Secretary Rescinds TPS Status Extention for Venezuelans

She highlighted the inappropriate redesignation from the prior administration before the expiration of the current designation.

Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Kristi Noem recently defended the decision by President Trump’s administration to roll back Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans and other foreign nationals.

TPS is a U.S. visa status offered to citizens of certain countries experiencing extreme hardship. Citizens of Venezuela were first included in the TPS program in 2021 after political turmoil in that nation. In January 2025, former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas extended the TPS status for Venezuelans an additional 18 months, to provide hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan citizens refuge in the United States.

Upon assuming her new position, Secretary Noem rescinded this extension, saying it would have allowed Venezuelan immigrants “were going to be able to stay here and violate our laws for another 18 months.” She also added that the reversal would allow President Trump’s administration to more easily deport members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, a key focus of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

Secretary Noem also pointed out that the previous secretary combined “two separate and concurrent Venezuela TPS designations” in the same notice, in violation of federal statute.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Noem and officials in the Homeland Security Department as they seek to carry out immigration enforcement.
  • For President Trump and members of his administration as they implement foreign and domestic policies.
