The first law of the president’s second term in the White House.
President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law this week, approving the first law passed under his second administration. The law is named after the Georgia nursing school student who was murdered by a Venezuelan citizen living in the United States illegally, who had already been charged with theft. The legislation allows the federal government to detain any illegal immigrant who has been charged with or admitted to non-violent crimes and authorizes states to sue the federal government for failing to enforce immigration laws.
The president praised Riley as “a light of warmth and kindness,” thanking her parents and sister, who attended the bill signing. He highlighted that the cause had bipartisan support.
“This is a perfect tribute to an incredible young lady,” President Trump said. “America will never, ever forget Laken Hope Riley.”
During remarks in the East Wing of the White House, President Trump called it a “landmark” law that is “going to save countless innocent American lives.”
