Senate Advances Defense Secretary Nomination

Senator Collins expresses reservations about Hegseth’s views of women serving in combat.

Members of the Senate advanced Pete Hegseth’s nomination on Thursday after the Senate Armed Services Committee voted him forward on Monday. The committee then cast another vote that waived the seven-day rule required between a nominee’s committee hearing and a full Senate vote.

Senator Susan Collins of Maine voted against the nominee, saying that despite Hegseth’s affirmation of women in combat, as long as they meet standards, she is “not convinced that his position on women serving in combat roles has changed.”

Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina said that regarding allegations that have been leveled at the defense secretary nominee, “I’m still examining the record… I go through extensive due diligence. I have talked to numerous people. I have spent hours on the phone. I have yet to find one instance of a first-hand account with corroboration to support the allegations. If I find that, then it would influence my vote. But I’ve completed due diligence, and I’ve looked for it, and I haven’t found it.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of the Senate as they prepare for the confirmation vote of the defense secretary nominee.
  • For Senate Majority Leader Thune to be discerning as he presides over the upper chamber.
