The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded Moderna approximately $590 million days before President Trump’s inauguration. The funding is supposed to accelerate the development of mRNA-based vaccines for pandemic influenza, specifically targeting H5N1 avian flu.
This funding, provided through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the Rapid Response Partnership Vehicle (RRPV) Consortium, will also support mRNA platform capabilities for addressing future infectious disease threats.
Assistant Secretary Dawn O’Connell discussed the role of mRNA innovation in improving pandemic preparedness. The department stated that collaboration between BARDA and Moderna is intended to enhance manufacturing versatility and ensure the U.S. is equipped to address emerging health threats.
