Biden Administration Extends Immigration Period for Venezuelans and Salvadorans

830,000 people can remain in the United States for another 18 months.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) extended the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) of Venezuelan and Salvadoran citizens living in the United States, allowing them to remain in the U.S. for another 18 months.

Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated, “El Salvador’s extension of TPS is based on geological and weather events, including significant storms and heavy rainfall in 2023 and 2024, that continue to affect areas heavily impacted by the earthquakes in 2001.“ The agency “is automatically extending [work permits] through March 9, 2026.”

He continued, “After reviewing the country conditions in Venezuela and consulting with interagency partners, it was determined that an 18-month TPS extension is warranted based on the severe humanitarian emergency the country continues to face due to political and economic crises under the inhumane Maduro regime. These conditions have contributed to high levels of crime and violence, impacting access to food, medicine, healthcare, water, electricity, and fuel.”

This extension covers 600,000 Venezuelans and 230,000 Salvadorans already in the United States. President Trump’s administration enacted TPS reductions in his first term.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Homeland Security officials as they evaluate conditions in the countries of origin for foreign nationals in the U.S.
  • For the president-elect and his incoming administration as they prepare to address immigration.
