Senate Advances Laken Riley Act to Debate Stage

Bipartisan approval moves the immigration policy bill to the negotiation period.

The Senate approved the Laken Riley Act for debate on the Senate floor on Monday with bipartisan support to renegotiate aspects of the immigration policy bill. The measure has already passed in the House of Representatives.

As it stands, the Laken Riley Act proposes mandated federal detention of illegal immigrants accused of theft, burglary, and similar crimes.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota said of the legislation, “This is not – I emphasize, not – a comprehensive immigration bill. It is an attempt to right one wrong – the fact that individuals already here illegally who have been charged with various property crimes are not required to be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.“

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York joined the vote to move the legislation forward but hopes that some changes can be made. “We’re going to ask our… colleagues to allow for debate and votes on amendments,” Senator Schumer said, calling for opportunities to “improve this bill.” He added, “This issue is very important, Americans deserve for us to debate the issues seriously, including by considering amendments.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
