President Biden’s administration issued a regulation that would remove 40 percent of water heaters from the market.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy released new climate-related energy efficiency standards last month under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act for gas tankless water heaters. The regulation, scheduled to take effect in March, calls for new gas instantaneous water heaters to reduce energy use by 13 percent in 2025.
Roughly 60 percent of water heaters currently on the market meet the new standard, meaning the remaining 40 percent would be phased out. While President Biden’s administration claims the standards will reduce the cost of use over the lifetime of the appliance, opponents of the regulation estimate that it will cost an average of $450 more for consumers to purchase new tankless water heaters that meet these standards.
President Biden’s administration had also issued proposed restrictions on gas stoves, which were greatly reduced after negative industry and public feedback.
President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering an executive order that would seek to protect the use of gas appliances, which are largely more efficient than electric. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that 75 million American households used natural gas for at least one appliance in 2020.
