New freight cars from other countries must have sensitive technologies removed.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) issued its final rule for freight car manufacturing security this month, requiring all rail companies to remove sensitive components from freight cars made in “countries of concern.”
Many new freight cars use electronic sensors and computer components to tell train crews if there are any issues while the car is en route. President Biden’s administration is concerned that if these components are manufactured in adversarial countries, they may provide foreign access and hacking from their country of origin.
“The Biden-Harris Administration continues to use the full range of our authority to make freight rail systems safer—and push the industry to integrate higher safety standards throughout their operations,” said Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “With the new standards we’re announcing today, freight cars will be built with components and technology to strengthen safety before they are incorporated into our nation’s rail systems.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Buttigieg and Transportation Department officials as they seek to ensure the security of railway cars.
- For Administrator Amit Bose as he oversees the Federal Railroad Administration.
