Global Partnership Intends to Eliminate Child Labor in Cocoa Production

Department of Labor collaborates with Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and industry leaders to address root causes.

The Department of Labor, alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and the World Cocoa Foundation, recently announced a framework to eliminate child labor in the cocoa sector, which produces nearly 60 percent of the world’s cocoa. The initiative focuses on addressing root causes, including poverty, lack of social protections, and insufficient corporate accountability. It prioritizes national action plans of the two countries, promotes supply chain transparency, and fosters partnerships.

“This framework places the relevant national plans of action of Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana at the center of our work, while underscoring the critical role that companies play in promoting due diligence and transparency in supply chains,” said Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs Thea Lee. “We are working together because we share a goal to end child labor as well as a common responsibility to improve the lives of vulnerable children, families, and workers.”

The framework emphasizes dialogue with farmers, workers, and civil society to ensure transparency and accountability in addressing child labor.
