Department of Defense faces challenges in accounting for $824 billion budget.
The Pentagon has failed to achieve a full accounting of its $824 billion budget in its seventh consecutive audit attempt, resulting in a “disclaimer of opinion.” This status indicates insufficient information was provided for auditors to give an accurate assessment. However, officials claimed that strides have been made toward improving financial transparency.
“Momentum is on our side, and throughout the Department there is strong commitment — and belief in our ability — to achieve an unmodified audit opinion,” stated Under Secretary of Defense Comptroller and Chief Financial Officer Michael McCord.
Despite mixed results, with nine entities receiving clean audit opinions, Under Secretary McCord expressed a commitment to achieving a clean audit by 2028. Of the 28 entities under the Pentagon’s oversight that underwent individual audits, nine earned unmodified, or clean, opinions, while 15 received disclaimers, and three remain pending.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Austin and the Joint Chiefs of Staff as they consider the results of the audit.
- For Under Secretary McCord as he anticipates improvements in the coming years.
- For wisdom for members of Congress as they appropriate funds to the Department of Defense.
