DOE Releases Report on Sustainable Aviation Fuel Scaling Challenges

Tracks research and development projects, and highlights next steps.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has released its latest report on efforts to develop sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the United States. In the interest of reducing the amount of emissions produced by air travel, the industry seeking to develop alternative sources of fuel that can help the sector decarbonize.

Many countries have discovered viable SAF options, but have not yet developed ways to scale the manufacturing processes needed to meet the demand. The United States is participating in this development race, and the DOE’s report outlines the status of programs, investments, and partnerships involved in that research.

“The latest in DOE’s Liftoff series, this report lays out the critical innovations and investments needed to drive down costs and further scale SAF production—paving the way for a cleaner, more competitive aviation sector that will benefit communities and businesses nationwide,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.
