Senator Thune will head the Senate and Representative Johnson renominated as House Speaker.
Senator John Thune of South Dakota was elected Senate majority leader this week. He served as the party whip, the number two position in Senate party leadership, for the last five years, and managed Senate floor operations in the last year after Senator Mitch McConnell, the previous majority leader, suffered a concussion after a fall in 2023.
Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming was elected to replace Senator Thune as the party whip. He was uncontested.
Congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana was also renominated for Speaker of the House through a unanimous voice vote. A vote of the full House will occur in January. President-elect Trump met with the members of his party at the Capital to express his support for Speaker Johnson. The Freedom Caucus did not enter a challenger nor hold a secret ballot as it had proposed to do.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Senator Thune and Speaker Johnson as they prepare to preside over their respective chambers in the coming Congress.
- For wisdom for members of the House and Senate as they elect chairs of committees and caucuses.
