In the News…

Representative Nikema Williams sponsored a congressional resolution declaring an international right to abortion. The congresswoman cited U.S. treaty obligations and World Health Organization Guidance as the basis for the claim.

Representative Williams stated, “Parties to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), including the United States, are obliged to protect reproductive freedom.”

The resolution calls for the decriminalization of abortion due to non-binding recommendations made by United Nations human rights organizations to the U.S. government.

While the congresswoman indicated that the resolution was inspired by the deaths of two women from her state after complications from taking abortion pills, some physicians have suggested that it was the lack of medical supervision over the use of the abortion pills that resulted in their deaths.

Over 100 colleagues of Congresswoman Williams have signed onto the resolution.
