Energy Department Opens Applications for Small Modular Reactor Projects

Funding will grow new fleet of small nuclear energy sources in the private sector.

The Department of Energy (DOE) opened applications for companies looking to construct small modular nuclear reactors, allocating $900 million in funding through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2024 and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The department hopes that this funding will deploy a fleet of these reactors across the country, increasing clean energy output more quickly than full-sized nuclear power centers.

“Revitalizing America’s nuclear sector is key to adding more carbon free energy to the grid and meeting the needs of our growing economy—from AI and data centers to manufacturing and healthcare,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

“Next-generation nuclear energy will play an important role in building the clean power sector of the future,” said Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy John Podesta.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Climate Advisor Podesta to seek God’s direction as he provides recommendations to the president and his administration.
  • For Secretary Granholm and U.S. energy officials to be discerning as they enact policies surrounding climate and carbon emissions.
