FTC Finalizes “Click to Cancel” Rule for Business Subscription Services

Chairwoman says canceling subscriptions must be “at least as easy” as signing up.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) finalized a rule requiring businesses to make canceling subscription services “at least as easy” as signing up for them. Chair Lina Khan said that the rule is an overdue response to a rising number of consumer complaints about situations in which it is “extraordinarily easy to sign up for a subscription, but absurdly difficult to cancel,” especially regarding gyms and retail outlets.

“The pandemic brought to the surface just how businesses are making people jump through endless hoops,” Chair Khan said. She added that requiring in-person cancellations while the businesses themselves were closed “really highlighted the absurdity of these practices.”

“Companies shouldn’t be able to trick you into paying for subscriptions that you don’t want,” the FTC chair stated.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Chair Khan and FTC commissioners as they seek to ensure people can cancel subscriptions easily.
  • For members of the commission to be discerning in their regulations and enforcement.
