Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on Wednesday, discussing Israel’s operations in Lebanon.
Secretary Austin urged his counterpart to ensure the safety of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He emphasized the United States’ commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to this conflict for the sake of both Lebanese and Israeli civilians. He also reiterated Israel’s responsibility to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
“The Secretary made clear that the United States is well postured to defend U.S. personnel, partners, and allies against attacks from Iran and Iranian-backed partners and proxies,” Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder stated. “The two leaders reiterated their commitment to preventing any actor from exploiting tensions or expanding the conflict in the region.”
