Senator from NJ Blocks Bill to Protect Minors from AI Deepfake Porn

Senator Booker objects to the Take It Down Act.

Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey objected to a bipartisan bill, titled the Take It Down Act, on Wednesday, but gave no reason for his last-minute objection. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas introduced the legislation which would make it a criminal act to generate AI pornographic material using the images of minors, often called “revenge porn.”

The bill was cosponsored by Senators Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, Laphonza Butler of California, John Hickenlooper of Colorado, Raphael Warnock of Georgia, and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico. A minor from New Jersey had testified before a Senate committee this summer about the damage done by such AI-generated porn.

“I am saddened that the senator from New Jersey chose to give no explanation for his objection,” Senator Cruz said. “The Shield Act was significantly modified at the request of my colleague from New Jersey before he would allow that to pass. Now it appears the senator from New Jersey no longer supports the language he has voted for and the language he negotiated and helped draft.”

Senators ordinarily explain the objections they make on the floor.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For senators and representatives to be discerning as they campaign for reelection.
  • For members of the Senate as they seek to protect teens from revenge porn.
