The Department of Transportation (DOT) published a general directive last week addressed to every transit agency in the United States, requiring them to take tangible actions to protect transit workers from the increased rate of physical assaults against them. This is the first general directive ever published by the Federal Transit Administration, requiring over 700 transit agencies to conduct risk assessment reports and implement improved safety strategies in light of identified issues.
“No American should go to work and worry they will not return home safely,” said FTA Deputy Administrator Veronica Vanterpool. “That is particularly true for the transit workers who were valuable frontline workers in our nation’s time of need. Transit workers experienced a significant increase in assaults over the years, which is unacceptable.”
