Vice President Promotes Removing the Filibuster for Abortion Rights

Some senators push back on averting the Senate’s permanent rule.

Vice President Kamala Harris advocated for removing the Senate filibuster to reestablish nationwide abortion rights during an interview in Wisconsin last week.

Vice President Harris said, “I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe [v. Wade], and get us to the point where 51 votes would be what we need to actually put back in law the protections for reproductive freedom and for the ability of every person and every woman to make decisions about their own body and not have their government tell them what to do.”

Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia responded that the filibuster is “the only thing that keeps us talking and working together.“

Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island stated, “We should approach it very carefully because what goes around comes around. That’s one of the few permanent rules of the United States Senate.”

Senator John Hickenlooper of Colorado said that, to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade, “The surest way to ensure that, which makes it much, much more durable, is to get 60 votes.“

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said that the upper chamber may discuss the filibuster next year. He did not indicate whether or not he supports an abortion legislation exception.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the members of the Senate as they conduct legislative business and consider rule changes.
  • For the vice president to come to recognize the value of unborn life.
