Judge Daniel Traynor

North Dakota U.S. District Court

Daniel Mack Traynor was born in 1970 in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota and received a Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law. He served as a law clerk at the North Dakota Supreme Court, before entering the private practice of law.

He was nominated by President Donald Trump to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota. On a cloture vote, his nomination was approved by the Senate. He received his judicial commission in January 2020.

In the News…

U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Traynor ruled in favor of the Catholic Benefits Association and the Diocese of Bismarck that employers do not have to cover in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. Earlier this year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued updated rules regarding the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) of 2022. The new rule required employers to allow time off for IVF treatments and abortions for their workers.

Judge Traynor issued a preliminary injunction against the regulation, stating that the plaintiffs may succeed in their claims that PWFA violates their freedom of religion.

The judge wrote, It is a precarious time for people of religious faith in America. It has been described as a post-Christian age.”

He continued, “One indication of this dire assessment may be the repeated illegal and unconstitutional administrative actions against one of the founding principles of our country, the free exercise of religion.”
