Volunteers to clean cemeteries and commemorate veterans, first responders, and service members across 34 states and Puerto Rico
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is hosting over 60 National Day of Service and Remembrance events at national cemeteries across 34 states and Puerto Rico in observance of September 11. These events are open to the public and will honor veterans, service members, law enforcement, firefighters, and other first responders who sacrificed their lives on and after September 11, 2001.
Along with the department’s National Cemetery Administration and other organizations, volunteers will clean headstones and beautify VA cemeteries to remember and honor these heroes.
“We encourage everyone to join us at one of this year’s September 11 National Day of Service events to honor the nation’s heroes who served and sacrificed 23 years ago,” said Acting Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Ronald Walters. “Our acts of volunteer service at cemeteries across the country tell these heroes that we have not forgotten their bravery and all they sacrificed for the country.”

- For Secretary McDonough and VA officials as they coordinate with private organizations to maintain the cemeteries and commemorate September 11.
- For Acting Under Secretary Walters as he heads the Office of Memorial Affairs.
- For the families and friends of those who lost loved ones on September 11 and thereafter, both from their work on Ground Zero or fighting the War on Terrorism in Iraq or Afghanistan.
