The Interior Department is preparing to announce Colorado River Basin water cuts.
Western states that rely on the Colorado River are preparing for the 2025 water management process. Some of the overlapping contracts, agreements, and court decisions that have determined allotments will be expiring next year. The states await the Interior Department’s (DOI) water availability assessment before proceeding with negotiations beyond 2026.
The Colorado River is the primary source of water for seven U.S. states, two Mexican states, and two dozen Indigenous Tribal Nations. The river’s once plentiful water levels have consistently decreased over the last few decades, resulting in an unsustainable overuse of water as the river generates less supply.
The Interior Department will release its proposed water cuts for 2025 later this month.
