Judge Mark Scarsi
Central California U.S. District Court
Mark Christopher Scarsi was born in December 1964 in Syracuse, New York. He earned undergraduate and master’s degrees from Syracuse University and received his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University.
He worked as a software engineer for defense computer system applications prior to beginning his legal career. He entered private practice in Los Angeles after graduating from law school.
Scarsi was nominated by President Donald Trump to a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. That nomination was returned twice, but he was renominated both times and finally confirmed by the Senate, and received his commission in September 2020.
In the News…
Judge Mark Scarsi of the Central California District Court issued a preliminary injunction ruling that the University of California, Los Angeles, must ensure Jewish students have access to the campus and classes.
Three Jewish students filed a discrimination suit against the university in June regarding campus protests that blocked them from classes and other campus areas.
Judge Scarsi wrote, “In the year 2024, in the United States of America, in the State of California, in the City of Los Angeles, Jewish students were excluded from portions of the UCLA campus because they refused to denounce their faith.”
Last month, Judge Scarsi ordered the school to create a plan that would protect Jewish students. The public university is also drafting guidelines regarding protests on campus.
