DOJ Charges Pakistani for Planning Assassination Attempt

Attorney general comments on Asif Merchant’s organized retaliation against politicians after the 2020 Iran drone strike.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) charged 46-year-old Asif Merchant, who has ties to Iran, for conspiring to assassinate government officials after the U.S. killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in 2020. After then-President Donald Trump authorized the drone strike that killed the leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Merchant began attempting to recruit people to help him kill a U.S. official in return.

Prior to the attempt on former President Trump’s life at the Pennsylvania rally, Merchant traveled to New York and worked with a hit man to target high-ranking U.S. officials, possibly including Trump.

“For years, the Justice Department has been working aggressively to counter Iran’s brazen and unrelenting efforts to retaliate against American public officials for the killing of Iranian General Soleimani,” Attorney General Merrick Garland stated.

He continued, “We expect that these threats will continue and that these cases will not be the last. The Justice Department will spare no resource to disrupt and hold accountable those who would carry out Iran’s lethal plotting against Americans.“

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Christopher Wary and FBI agents and investigators as they track suspects who target American public servants.
  • For Attorney General Merrick and DOJ officials to uphold and impartially prosecute criminals.
