President and Vice President Discuss Israel, Iran in Situation Room

Iran threatens punishment for assassination of Hamas chairman Haniyeh.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met with national security officials in the White House Situation Room on Monday to discuss ways to manage the fallout of the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the chairman of Hamas.

The Hamas leader was killed last week at his residence in Tehran, Iran when an explosive device planted in the building was detonated. Israel has not acknowledged responsibility for the assassination, but Iran vowed to seek revenge against the country for this act of aggression.

U.S. leaders are preparing for potential attacks from both Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which is an Iranian proxy. They have also escalated communications with Iranian leadership, urging them to steer away from actions that could trigger all-out war in the Middle East.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president, vice president, and defense and diplomatic officials as they consider ways to reduce tensions with Iran.
  • For U.S. and allied leaders as they collaborate on options to defuse the escalating situation in the Middle East.
