The group’s access to U.S. banking is cut off due to efforts to overthrow the DRC government.
The Department of the Treasury has sanctioned the rebel group known as the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) in an action that supports the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The militaristic group has been attempting to overthrow the DRC government, enacting violence against civilians as they continue claiming territory in the South Kivu province. The most notorious group within this rebel collective is M23, which began its operations in Rwanda in 2012.
“Today’s action reinforces our commitment to hold accountable those who seek to perpetuate instability, violence, and harm to civilians to achieve their political goals,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson. “We condemn AFC and its affiliates, including M23, for fueling this deadly conflict and exacerbating a humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Under Secretary Nelson to be led by the Lord as he oversees the placement of sanctions against adversarial and destabilizing entities.
- For wisdom for Secretary Yellen as she heads the Treasury Department.
- For the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo as they endure political instability and violence.
