The two-month criminal trial ends with guilty verdicts on counts of corruption, bribery, obstruction of justice, acting as a foreign agent, and conspiracy.
The Manhattan federal jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts against Senator Bob Menendez. The U.S. senator from New Jersey faces new calls to resign after the jury’s verdict on every charge of corruption, bribery, obstruction of justice, acting as a foreign agent, and conspiracy.
The Justice Department charged that, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Menendez received bribes that protected three businessmen and benefited Egypt. Charges were later added regarding his use of power to benefit Qatar.
Senator Menendez stepped down as chair of the foreign relations committee at the time of his indictment last September. The federal indictment stated the bribes “included cash, gold, payments toward a home mortgage, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury vehicle, and other things of value.”
