The Tenth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled this week to allow the Department of Education to lower the monthly payments of millions of student loan borrowers. Some states have sued the president’s administration over the debt relief plan, claiming it is unlawful.
The appellate court placed a stay on a lower court’s injunction against the plan. This permits the Education Department to reduce undergraduate loan payments and direct loan servicers to implement the plan’s changes.
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona stated that the circuit court “sided with student loan borrowers across the country who stand to benefit from the SAVE Plan – the most affordable repayment plan in history.”
