Danny Werfel
Commissioner, Internal Revenue Service
Daniel I. Werfel was born in 1971. He earned an undergraduate degree from Cornell University, a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law, and a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University.
He served in the Office of Management and Budget and was later a trial attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. During President George W. Bush’s administration, he was Deputy Controller of the OMB.
President Barack Obama nominated Werfel to be OMB Controller. He was confirmed by the Senate and assumed that position in October 2009. He was later appointed Acting Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service by President Obama.
After working in the private sector for eight years, Werfel was nominated by President Biden to be Commissioner of Internal Revenue. He was confirmed by the Senate and assumed his position in March 2023 for a term that will end in November 2027.
Werfel is married to Beth. and they have two children.

The Internal Revenue Service has announced that the agency will deny the vast majority of claims for the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) program, which was set up by Congress to support businesses during the pandemic shut down. .
“We’re seeing clear indicators that the vast majority, at least 70 percent of the ERC claims currently awaiting processing, have red flags about their accuracy,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said Thursday. “A lot of these claims simply aren’t valid.”
Commissioner Werfel reported that the program’s cost has exceeded Congress’ expectations, reaching $232 billion. The agency launched a withdrawal process for claims last year and investigators have launched criminal investigations into several hundred fraudulent claims.
