Judge Amy Berman Jackson

District of Columbia District Court

Amy Berman Jackson was born in July 1954 in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned an undergraduate degree from Harvard College and received her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.  She clerked at the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

She served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia for six years before entering the private practice of law.  During that time, she also served as an expert legal commentator for many news organizations.

She was nominated by President Barack Obama to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. That nomination lapsed without action, and he nominated her again six months later. She was confirmed by the Senate in a 97-0 vote and received her commission in March 2011.

She is married to Darryl Jackson, and they have one son. She is Jewish.

In the News…

A lawsuit filed against President Trump over how the White House keeps records was rejected by a federal judge. In a 22-page decision, Judge Amy Berman Jackson ruled that past legal precedents say she cannot monitor the White House’s enforcement of laws on how executive branch records are kept.

Because the lawsuit concerned how the White House acted in not keeping records of the president’s meetings with foreign leaders, instead of the legality of the policies of keeping records, the judge said she did not have the power to ensure the White House followed those policies.

“The Court is bound by Circuit precedent to find that it lacks authority to oversee the President’s day-to-day compliance with the statutory provisions involved in this case,” Jackson wrote.

“This opinion will not address, and should not be interpreted to endorse, the challenged practices; nor does it include any finding that the Executive Office [of the President] is in compliance with its obligations,” she wrote.
