The Joy of God’s Protection

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.     – Psalm 5:11 

There is a tree in Nevada that the National Forest Service claims is the oldest living thing in the world. They have nicknamed the bristlecone pine tree “methuselah,” and have determined its age as of May 2024 to be 5,000 years. It has experienced temperature extremes, high winds, and dry soils, always adapting to conditions around it. Its exact location is kept secret for its own protection. In Israel’s West Bank, there is an olive tree that is estimated to be between 4,000 and 5,000 years old. It would have been a well-established tree when David wrote today’s psalm. 

Psalm 5 has been characterized as a morning prayer of David. Some believe it may have been written before he became king, during the time Saul was pursuing him. Others have said it was when David was being chased by his son Absolom who sought to kill him and take over the throne of Israel. Chances are, out in the wilderness, David had spent a restless night. Imagine, he may have tried sleeping under that very old olive tree! In this morning prayer, David asked the Lord for guidance and protection. He was confident in God’s power to deliver him. Then he praised the Lord for His ultimate defense of the righteous. 

The Explaining the Book commentary says “God is a shield for the righteous—for those who love his name and trust him. And his shield is all around us. He’s not going to let anything touch us.” As you begin each day, acknowledge that it is God who is your refuge and, because of Him, you can face the day with joy instead of fear. It is tempting for righteous people to become discouraged in today’s environment. Consider the old trees and know that God also preserves you according to His purposes. Give Him thanks. and let His peace engulf your days.
