The senators seek to promote international communication for advanced technology projects.
Senators Mitt Romney of Utah, Bill Hagerty of Tennessee, Jim Risch of Idaho, and Tim Kaine of Virginia proposed a bill this week that would require U.S. officials involved with the Australia-United Kingdom-United States (AUKUS) alliance to coordinate with Britain and Australia on how to include Japan in their advanced technology projects.
Senator Romney stated, “The legislation would require… (AUKUS) coordinators at both the U.S. Departments of State and Defense to engage with the Japanese government, and consult with counterparts in the U.K and Australia, to discuss what including Japan in certain advanced technology cooperation activities under the AUKUS framework would look like.”
Senator Risch, who also serves as the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said, “Importantly, it also ensures the executive branch consults with its counterparts in the United Kingdom and Australia before expanding AUKUS.”
