The president’s administration issued authorization and permitting reforms, committing $331 million for Western power capacity.
The Department of Energy announced a final rule that establishes the Coordinated Interagency Transmission Authorizations and Permits Program to facilitate the federal environmental review and permitting of certain transmission projects. The initiative is set to provide up to $331 million for expanding grid capacity in the Western U.S. and is expected to add over 2,000 megawatts of capacity and create over 300 union construction jobs.
“The Biden-Harris Administration is doing everything everywhere to get more power to more people, in more places,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “We are acting with the urgency the American people deserve to realize a historic rework of the permitting process that slashes times for new transmission lines, puts more Americans to work and meets the energy needs of today and the future.”
The department announced funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to support the Southwest Intertie Project (SWIP-North), bringing wind energy from Idaho to Nevada and California and facilitating the advancement of solar resources for the Pacific Northwest.
