Includes commuted sentence of former Illinois governor
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that he would be pardoning and commuting the sentences of 11 individuals. Among those whose sentences were commuted was former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich who was found guilty of charges of political corruption, including seeking to sell the senate seat opened up upon President Obama’s election in 2008.
President Trump sought to shorten the 14-year prison term of Mr. Blagojevich, which he called a “ridiculous sentence.” The President said, “That was a tremendously powerful, ridiculous sentence, in my opinion, and in the opinion of many others.” Since 2018, Patti Blagojevich, the wife of the former governor has been advocating for his pardon, linking his trial to the investigation of special counsel Robert Mueller.
